In other words, the founders believed that “free” blacks could not be economically emancipated in the United States. In 1822, this society began to colonize what is now Liberia, under the idea that blacks would have a better chance of freedom and prosperity in Africa than in the United States. The country declared independence in 1847, recognized by the United States in 1862, becoming the first African nation to gain independence in modern times. 200 years later, we still wonder: where is this “prosperity project” for free blacks? Today, Back to Africa seems to be taking up the same discourse, but with a more modern look. We are sold the dream of a return to our roots, but in reality, it’s a business like any other. The idea of a return to Africa, often associated with emancipation and the reconquest of our roots, is here instrumentalized for commercial purposes.
