Le kolatier est l'un des arbres fruitiers les plus cultivés en pays Bamiléké. Son fruit, à qui on reconnait une vertu aphrodisiaque est un excitant utilisé aussi comme coupe faim.

Jusqu'à une date assez récente, la richesse d'un Bamiléké s'évaluait au nombre de kolatiers qu'il possédait dans ses champs. L'importance de cet arbre fruitier dans le patrimoine était tellement élevée qu'il arrivait que le propriétaire cède son terrain tout en gardant son droit de propriété sur les kolatiers.

La kola est chez le Bamiléké ce que le lait est chez les éleveurs nomades. Elle est partagée dans toutes les circonstances de la vie en signe d'amitié et même d'alliance.On n'imagine pas une cérémonie de mariage sans kola. C'est la distribution de la kola, cassée par la mariée, aux invités qui scelle définitivement l'amitié entre les deux familles.

Bien que la consommation de la kola ne nécessite pas d'initiation particulière, son partage en public obéit à un rituel assez strict.

A l’exception de la cérémonie de mariage au cours de laquelle l'honneur de fendre et de distribuer la kola revient au jeune couple, le privilège de fendre et de partager la kola en public revient dans l'ordre de priorité suivant :

- au notable le plus âgé
- au notable le plus influent
- aux hommes mariés
- aux femmes mariés.

La personne honorée reçoit la kola, remercie le donneur et remet le ou les fruits à une personne plus jeune ou de statut social inférieur qui se chargera de la distribution à toute l'assistance.

Celui qui est chargé du service ouvre les fruits en quartiers et les dispose soit dans la paume de sa main droite soit dans un panier. Le service commence par le notable le plus important et le plus âgés. Suivent dans l'ordre les hommes et ensuite les femmes.

Le nombre de quartier d'une kola est chargé de signification.

Les nombres impairs et particulièrement le nombre 7 augurent la chance.

Demander de la kola à une connaissance est une marque de sympathie dont il est conseillé d'user et, au besoin d'en abuser.

Même si vous n'êtes pas particulièrement friand de ce fruit au goût légèrement amer, ne vous privez pas d'en demander aux personnes avec qui vous sympathisez; vous les mettrez plus en confiance et les rendrez plus réceptives.

Manger seul une kola en présence des tiers est perçu comme un acte d'avarice et de refus de d'ouvrir aux autres.

Celui a qui on exprime une demande de kola a l'obligation morale d'y donner suite. S'il n'en possède, la courtoisie lui conseille d'en promettre pour la prochaine fois.
